Looking for a new set of Glock mags, or do you just have questions about magazine care and maintenance?
Are Newer Glock Mags Compatible with Older Generations?
Gen 1, 2, and 3 mags are all compatible up to Gen 3 (for that respective model) as long as the magazine release is set up in the proper (standard) configuration.
Glock’s Gen 4 magazines will work with earlier generations (of the same model).
However, according to Glock, its Gen 5 magazines will not function with earlier generation Glock pistols.
Are Any Glock Mags Interchangeable?
Yes, some Glock magazines are interchangeable, but not all.
As a general rule, Glocks with the same chamberings can accept the mags of larger Glocks in the same chambering. (For instance, the G19 can accept G17 mags, but not vice versa).
However, be aware that the larger pistol will not accept a shorter mag of a Glock in the same chambering because the magazine will not seat properly.
Also, be aware that some mags are single stack and others are double, and that these mags are not interchangeable.
Do the G17 and G19 Use the Same Mag?
Technically, no. Even though the G19 and G17 are both 9mm handguns that take double stack mags, the smaller size and shorter nature of the G19 mean that G17 mags can be used with G19 pistols but not the other way around.
Is There a Reason to Buy a Speed Loader?
Yes, in addition to the fact that using a speedloader means you can spend more time shooting and less time loading, a speed loader can also help preserve your mag’s feed lips, which protects the functionality of the mag and extends its usable lifespan.
Can I Store Glock Mags Loaded?
Magazine spring fatigue occurs from multiple compression and decompression cycles, not from compression alone. Therefore Glock magazines - and all firearm magazines - can be stored loaded if you so choose.
Do Glock Mags Need to Be Broken in?
To some degree, all firearm magazines need to be broken in, including Glock mags.
The easiest way to break in a Glock mag is to use it. Mags will break in naturally with time and use.
You can speed things up if you want, though. The best thing you can do is load the mag fully and then unload it, several times (20 or so) using a speedloader. This will move things along.
Also, to make sure the mag catches and drops freely, load it into the mag chute till it catches and drop it a few times.
Do Glock Mags Need to Be Cleaned?
Glock mags, like all firearm mags, need to be cleaned. However, since they are not made of metal, they are not prone to corrosion like many other types of magazines.
Cleaning a Glock magazine is as straightforward as cleaning any other type of gun mag. For more information, please consult our previous guide on magazine maintenance.
Should You Lube Glock Mags?
Not with a liquid lube, ever. Doing so will cause an accumulation of liquid lubricant buildup that will become gummy and can cause jams. Liquid lubricant accumulation can also attract dust and other particulate matter that will accelerate wear.
Clean the mags, dry them completely before reassembling, and they will be very reliable. If you really want, you can use compressed air to force out any dust, and some even suggest the use of a dry lube like Hornady One Shot which is specifically formulated to prevent issues associated with liquid lube accumulation.
Should You Use an Ultrasonic Cleaner?
Never use an ultrasonic cleaner with a Glock mag, especially if it uses some sort of chemical cleaning agent.
How Frequently Do Glock Mags Need to Be Cleaned?
Glock mags need to be cleaned whenever they start to get dirty, which is not an easy question to answer as it will depend on the frequency of use.
Cleaning the mags anytime you clean the pistol is a good way to put them on a predictable schedule, though, and will ensure your gun gets routine maintenance on a regular basis.
Also, if you ever experience feeding issues that may be a signal that you need to break down and clean the mag.
Should I Get an Extended Glock Mag?
Extended Glock mags are not only useful because they increase the capacity of the firearm. Some extended Glock mags, such as those for the Glock 42 subcompact, extend the grip of the gun and enable you to get a much better grip on the pistol.
