The .223 Remington round is a versatile short-action (mini, according to some) cartridge with a wide range of applications from hunting to competition.
It is widely available, flat-shooting, produces almost no recoil, and perhaps best of all, is usually quite affordable.
So we rounded up some of the best .223 Remington rounds we offer here at Bucking Horse Outpost. Here they are.
American Eagle .223 (55, 62, 75-Grain)
American Eagle .223 is a great line, available here in 55, 62, and 75-grain bullet weights.
Naturally, they produce slightly different muzzle velocities (as a result of the variance in bullet weight) but one thing all these American Eagle .223 rounds offer is this: value.
They are exceptionally affordable, extremely consistent, reliable, and accurate, especially at greater ranges. Also, they’re loaded with boat-tailed bullets, which offer improved ballistic performance for long-range accuracy.
They’re also priced right for plinking, training, and high-volume shooting applications.
If you need a long-range .223 round, these FMJ American Eagle .223 rounds are hard to beat, and offer performance on par with much pricier brands.
Federal Premium Gold Medal .223
While Federal’s boat-tailed American Eagle .223 is tough to beat for long-range competition, the Federal Premium .223 line might have it topped.
These .223 rounds are loaded with 73-grain boat-tailed Berger bullets and engineered to produce the highest ballistic coefficients, flattest-trajectories, and lowest wind drift.
For long-range competition and target shooting, they are an excellent option.
Ammo Inc. .223 (55-Grain)
There’s one aspect of this Ammo, Inc. .223 ammo that lets it compete effectively: price. It’s one of the most affordable .223 rounds on our website.
But don’t let that scare you off. They are consistent, reliable, and accurate, and FMJ bullets and “Hyperclean” technology help keep fouling out of your barrel and action.
So if you’re looking for a cheap, reliable round for training or plinking, this is it.
Remington UMC .223
Need another option in a highly reliable and accurate .223 round for target shooting, training, and competition? Get one of these Mega-Packs (200 rounds) of Remington UMC .223.
They’re consistent, accurate, reliable, and loaded into reloadable brass cases with non-corrosive boxer-primers.
We also offer this round in a 300-round “Freedom Bucket” configuration that will save you more on the bulk purchase.
Remington Premier Accutip-V
This is the .223 varmint round. Remington’s Premier Accutip-V bullets feature a gold-polymer tip that drives rearward at impact, causing the thin jacket and soft lead core to fragment violently.
They are absolutely ideal for varmint control, deliver excellent energy transfer on small targets, and are blazing-fast and flat-shooting, with light, 50-grain bullets and a muzzle velocity of 3410 FPS.
SinterFire GreenLine .223
SinterFire GreenLine .223 ammunition is designed to minimize the hazards associated with lead ammo while also improving safety.
Their GreenLine .223 ammo is loaded with a lead-free primer and lead-free, frangible bullets that produce a smaller ricochet risk, making them safer for training, especially at indoor ranges.
They’re ideal for steel shooting at indoor and outdoor ranges as well as for close-quarters combat training.
Best Uses for the .223 Remington Cartridge
When loaded with an appropriate bullet, .223 Remington is an excellent cartridge for a wide range of applications and different shooting disciplines.
It is a low-recoil cartridge, making it ideal for introducing beginners to safe, responsible firearm handling and shooting.
It also produces a fairly flat trajectory, making it excellent for long range shooting.
Moreover, since it is affordable and accurate, it is a good option for high-volume shooting, plinking, and training.
Also, when loaded with a soft point or hollow point bullet, .223 Remington can be an excellent cartridge for dispatching varmints or hunting small to medium game.
Are .223 and 5.56 the Same?
For those unfamiliar with popular firearm cartridges, it might seem as though .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO were the exact same cartridge.
In fact, even among those that do recognize familiar nomenclature, the two cartridges are nearly identical in dimension.
However, they are not the same. The .223 Remington is loaded to specifications that produce lower chamber pressures, making it unsafe to fire 5.56 ammo from a .223 chamber.
While some consider it acceptable to fire .223 in a 5.56, the best suggestion is to fire only the exact cartridge from a firearm, as indicated by the barrel stamp or the manufacturer’s official materials.
